Dry eye syndrome

One of the diseases that awaits people who work for a long time at the computer is the “dry eye” syndrome. The basis of this disease is a violation of the wetting of the surface of the eye due to damage to the “tear film”.

Damage to the tear film is caused by: smog and air from the air conditioner, cosmetics and improper wearing of contact lenses, and, very importantly, electromagnetic radiation from a computer monitor. In addition, when working on a PC, we make rare movements for eyelids than usual, and this already disrupts the normal moistening of the eye.

The syndrome of “dry eye” is characterized by the following symptoms: the absence or small amount of tears, viscous discharge from the eyes in the form of threads, foreign body sensation, itching, pain, increased photosensitivity, poor tolerance to wind and cold air, smoke, as well as deterioration in visual acuity at throughout the day.

The treatment of dry eye syndrome today is considered a complex and not yet fully resolved problem.

The most common remedy that improves the well-being of patients is the so-called “artificial tear” preparations. The main component of these drugs is hydrophilic polymers, which, when they get on the surface of the eye, lubricate it, which helps to improve the nutrition of the conjunctiva and cornea.

Ophthalmologists advise, first of all, to remember the elementary requirements for working at a computer. The distance from the eyes to the monitor should be at least 50 cm. And the time of continuous work at the computer should last forty minutes (no more), after which you need to take a 10-15-minute break. It is good for the health of the eyes and frequent movement of the eyelids (blinking), and drinking more fluids.

To reduce visual fatigue, it is useful to perform the following exercises in a computerized workplace:

– Close eyes. With circular movements of the palms, massage the eyeballs for 10 seconds.

– Look straight ahead, then left, right and down, up – 10 seconds.

– With some effort, close and flatten your eyes – 10 seconds.

– Roll your eyes to the right and left 2-3 times, and then close for 10 seconds.

Exercises are recommended to be done daily 2-3 times.
