Rangpur

Rangpur (Beng. রংপুর) is one of the largest cities in Bangladesh, the administrative center of the Rangpur region. It is located in the north-west of the country, near the Ghagat River. In honor of the city, a university called “Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur” was built, located in the southern part of the city. Initially, the city was considered one large district, but with its development, it was decided to divide the municipality into Rangpur, Kurigrad, Nilfamari, Lalmomirhat and Gaibandha. One of the fastest growing areas of the city is Ranpgur, as it has a large number of coal deposits, as well as a military camp.

History
The city was conquered by the army of Raja Man Singh, the commander of the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1575. Only in 1686 did it become part of the Mughal Empire. Because of this event, some places in the city were given Mughal names such as Mughalbasa or Mughalhat. Later, the settlement came under the possession of “Sarker” Goragat. For the entire period of the existence of the city, there were a lot of peasant uprisings and resistances in it.

Geography
Basically, alluvial soil prevails in the city (80%), and the rest is torrential soil. The temperature fluctuates from 32 to 11°C above zero, the annual rainfall averages 2931 mm. The area of ​​the city covers 28 square kilometers. According to the 2006 census, 250,000 people permanently lived in the city, the population is rapidly falling and in 2017 it was 120,000 (men 52%, women 48%). Of this number of residents, only 56% can write, read and speak correctly.

Climate
The settlement is located in a dry tropical climate. The prevailing winds are monsoons, which are accompanied by high temperatures and significant humidity. The summer season starts in early April and continues until July. The lowest temperature recorded in January was 7°C (45°F). The annual rainfall is 1,448 millimeters (57.0 in).

Economy
The city is an attractive place from an economic point of view. The center has several government and private banks, insurance companies, residential hotels, Chinese and Indian restaurants, gift shops and many other food centers. The region is one of the most important economic centers in Bangladesh.

Zoo
The Central Zoo of Rangpur is one of the main places of recreation and entertainment in the city.
