Rajshahi (Beng. রাজশাহী) is one of the largest cities in Bangladesh. The area is 96.68 km².

Geography
Located in the Rajshahi region in northwestern Bangladesh, near the state border with India. It stands on the banks of the Ganges River.

History
Rajshahi was part of the Pundra region of ancient Bengal. The capital of Vijaya Sena, a ruler who fought in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, was located 14 km from Rajshahi. In the Middle Ages, the region was known as Rampur Boalia. The origin of the modern name “Rajshahi” is a matter of dispute between scholars. Most are inclined to believe that it comes from the Indian name of kings and zamindars – “raj”, and from the Persian – “shah”; both words mean “kingdom” or “realm”.

Since the beginning of the 18th century, a colony of the Dutch East India Company, which was engaged in the silk trade, was located on the site of Rajshahi. In 1798, the colony passed into the possession of the English East India Company, which in 1825 established the administrative center of East Bengal and Assam here. It was badly damaged during the Assam earthquake on June 12, 1897. From 1858 to 1947 it was part of British India, then independent India, since 1971 it was part of Bangladesh. In 1876, it acquired the status of a city, but was declared the center of a municipality. Changed its status several times during the 20th century. August 13, 1987 received full autonomy within the municipality. By the decision of the city council of September 11, 1988, it received the status of a free city. Only in 1991 this decision was recognized by the leadership of the municipality.

Economy
There are about 77,000 hectares of cane arable land in the millzone of the Rajshahi sugar factory of which 23,700 hectares per year on average will be put under sugarcane sugar factory cultivation. contributed Tk.1133.00 million to National Ex-checks as dividends and tax liabilities from 1972-73.
