Jinju

Jinju (Korean: 진주시?, 晋州市?, Jinju-si) is a city in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, South Korea. Until 1925 it was the provincial capital.

History
Human settlements in Jinju have been known since ancient times. In the era of the Kaya confederation, the Koryong Kaya tribal union was located here, then the city became part of the ancient Korean state of Baekje, and after it – the United Silla. In the first millennium, the area had many names, including Koyolju, Koyolseong, Cheongju, and Gangju. During the Goryeo state, Jinju received its modern name. In 1896, the provincial capital Gyeongsangnam-do was moved here. The status of the capital was lost only in 1925. On August 15, 1949, Jinju received the status of a city (si).
