Seongnam

Seongnam (Korean: 성남시?, 城南市?, Seongnam-si) is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Seongnam is a typical satellite city of Seoul, consisting mainly of residential areas. The most densely populated part of the city is Pundangu (or simply Pundan), which is home to many high-rise residential towers. At the beginning of the 21st century, the city authorities initiated a movement to give Seongnam the status of a city of direct subordination, since the population of Seongnam is growing quite quickly and has exceeded 1 million people. In August 2009, the decision was made to merge Seonnam with the neighboring city of Hanam.

History
Seongnam came to prominence in 18 BC. e., when King Onjo moved the capital of the ancient Korean state Paekche to these lands. Soon, the territory of modern Seongnam became part of another Korean state, Goguryeo, and in 475, the county of Bukhansan (Bukhansangun) arose here. In 553, the Sinju region was formed here. In 665, when the territory on which modern Seongnam is located was in the hands of the United Silla state, it was renamed the Hansan (Hansanju) region. In 904, during the Goryeo Dynasty, it was renamed Gwangju. In 1395, it was included in Gyeonggi Province. In 1895, Gwangju received the status of a county (gun). In 1964, Seongnam became part of Gwangju County, which received the status of a separate city in 1973. In 1989, construction began on the new Pundangu district, which later became the center of the young city.
