Tongliao

Tongliao (Chinese: 通辽, pinyin: Tōngliáo, Mong. Tүnliao hot?, ᠲᠥᠩᠯᠢᠶᠠᠣ ᠬᠣᠲᠠ?) is an urban district in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (PRC).

During the Ming Dynasty, these lands were borderlands, which were part of the area of responsibility of the Fuyu guard (扶余卫). At the end of the 16th century, they were absorbed by the Manchu state of the Later Jin, later transformed into the Qing Empire. In 1636, Jirem aimag (哲里木盟) was formed here, to which 4 tribes and 10 khoshuns were subordinate.
After the Xinhai Revolution, these lands were subordinated to the Rehe Special Administrative Region (热河特别行政区), which was transformed into Rehe Province in 1928. In 1933, the province of Rehe was occupied by the Japanese, who transferred it to the puppet state of Manchukuo; in Manchukuo, these lands became part of Xing’an Province.
In August 1945, the 1st Guards Airborne Division took part in the Khingan-Mukden operation, ended the war in the Tongliao region, where for the first time in the existence of the division, it was landed.

After the Second World War, these lands became the scene of struggle between the Communists and the Kuomintang. When the People’s Republic of China was formed in 1949, and the aimag became part of the newly formed Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia, the aimag included two counties (Tongliao and Kailu) and 5 khoshuns (Jarud, Khorchin-Zoichzhongqi, Khorchin-Zoihouqi, Khure and Naiman). In 1951, the city of Tongliao was separated from Tongliao County. In 1953, the aimag was liquidated, but in 1954 it was re-established. In 1958, Tongliao County was liquidated, and its territory was reassigned to the city of Tongliao; in 1964, Tongliao County was restored. In 1965, the khoshun Khorchin-Yuichzhongqi was transferred from the Hulun-Buir aimag to the Jiram aimag.
In 1969, the aimag was transferred to the province of Jilin; in 1979 it was returned to the Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia.

On November 9, 1985, by a decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, the city district of Kholin-Khoto was formed from part of the land of the Khoshun Jarud. In 1986, by decision of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Tongliao County was liquidated, and its territory became part of the city of Tongliao.
In 1996, by a decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Khingan aimag (liquidated in 1954) was recreated, and khoshun Khorchin-Yuichzhongqi was transferred to it from under the jurisdiction of Jirem aimag.
Decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China on January 13, 1999 aimag Jiram and the city of Tongliao were liquidated, and instead of the aimag, the city district of Tongliao was formed; the former city of Tongliao became the Khorchin district within it.
