Erenhot

Eren Hot is an urban district of the Shilin-Gol aimag of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (PRC).
Eren Hot is located in northern China, in the Gobi desert on the Sino-Mongolian border. The area of the city county is 450 km².

History
In 1820, Yiling Post Station was established in this area. In 1899, the telegraph line Urga – Zhangjiakou passed here, and the name Eren appeared on geographical maps.
In January 1956, traffic was opened on the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar-Moscow railway, and in April 1956 the settlement of Eren (二连镇) was formed as part of the Sunid-Yutsi khoshun of the Shilin-Gol aimag. In July 1957, the village was raised to the status of a khoshun, renamed Eren-Khoto and subordinated directly to the government of the aimag. In January 1966, by decision of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Erenhot was raised in status to a city khoshun. In December 1969, by decision of the Revolutionary Committee of Inner Mongolia, Eren-Khoto was transferred to the Ulanchab aimag, but in May 1980 it was returned to the Shilin-Gol aimag. In 1985, Eren Hot was reclassified as an urban county.

Population
The population of Eren Hot was 47,025 (2000 census). The vast majority of them were Chinese (40,430 people – that is, 86%), Mongols (6,120 people – 13%), Manchus (366 people – 1%). According to the 2010 census, the population of the city county was 74,197.

Transport
Eren-Khoto is the terminus of the Trans-Mongolian railway, the gauge of which is identical to the Russian one (1520 mm) and differs from that adopted in China (1435 mm), so trains crossing the Sino-Mongolian border are replaced with wagon bogies here.
To the north of the city there is also a border crossing for wheeled freight transport. Eren Hot is the northern end of Chinese National Highway 208 starting in Changzhi. On the Mongolian side opposite Eren Hot is the Mongolian city of Zamyn-Uude, from which a highway is laid through Ulaanbaatar to the border with Russia.

Attractions
In the immediate vicinity of Eren Hot, especially near the salt lake Eren Nur lying to the east, paleontologists discovered numerous remains of dinosaurs. In 1921, the American scientist Roy C. Andrews, for the first time in Asia, north of the Himalayas, discovered here are fossil giant reptiles. Currently, Eren Hot has a dinosaur museum.
