Khatgal

Khatgal (Mong. Khatgal) is a village in the north of Mongolia, in the Alag-Erdene sum of the Khuvsgel aimag. Located on the southern shore of Lake Khubsugul, 101 km by road from the city of Muren and 757 km from Ulaanbaatar. There is a small port and an airport. Along with Khankh, it is the largest tourist center on the banks of Khuvsgul.

History
Hatgal was founded as an outpost of the Qing Empire in 1727. By 1910 it was a small settlement, formed mainly through trade with Russia. In 1914, a telegraph line was built through Khatgal, connecting the Russian border with the city of Ulyasutai; in 1921 about 150 Russian settlers lived in Khatgale. In the same year it became the administrative center of the region, and in 1931 – the center of the new aimag Khuvsgel, but already in 1933 the center of the aimag was moved to the city of Muren.
During the Mongolian People’s Republic, Khatgal was actively developing, the port of the city specialized in the transportation of oil products from the USSR to Mongolia, which was carried out by water in the summer, and in the winter by the so-called. winter road laid on the ice of the lake.
In 1990, about 7,000 people lived here, but the cessation of transport links and the closure of the local wool processing plant led to mass migration. Thus, by 1994 the population had dropped to 3,756 people, and by 2000, to 2,498 people. According to the latest data as of December 31, 2006, the population of Khatgal is 2,796 people. As a result of the administrative reform carried out in Mongolia in the post-socialist period, Khatgal, like a number of other cities that were not the administrative centers of aimags, lost the status of a city, nevertheless retaining the status of an urban-type settlement (in Mongolian terminology, Mong. Tosgon), which has its own administrator, appointed by the governor of the aimag, but whose local self-government deputies are members of the council of the Alag-Erdene somon. The statistical authorities of Mongolia take into account data on Khatgal in a separate line separately from Alag Erdene somon.

In 2007, a new airport was opened in the village.

Economy
Today the basis of the economy of Hatgala is tourism. On the western shore of Lake Khubsugul, near the village, there are many tourist centers. The administration of the Khubsugul National Park is located in the village. There is a small airport.
