Puerto Lempira

Puerto Lempira (Spanish: Puerto Lempira) is a city in the eastern part of Honduras, on the coast of the Caratasca lagoon of the Caribbean Sea, in the historical region of La Mosquitia. Administrative center of the department of Gracias a Dios. Despite the fact that the city has no paved roads, it is the largest city in the department.

Named after the Indian leader Lempira, who fought against the Spanish conquistadors at the beginning of the 16th century.

Puerto Lempira became the administrative center in 1975. Prior to this, the functions of the center were performed by the city of Brus-Laguna.

After Anastasio Samosa was overthrown and exiled in Nicaragua in 1979 by the Sandinista National Liberation Front, Puerto Lempira became the center of CIA operations against the Sandinistas.

The city is served by the Puerto Lempira Regional Airport, which is also one of the hubs for the Honduran Air Force.
