Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park (188 sq. km) is located 156 km from Nairobi, in the African Great Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru is the main attraction of this area. The size of the lake is quite variable from 5 to 30 sq. km. Due to a weak hydraulic system, the lake dries up during the dry season, and regains life during the rainy season. Lake Nakuru is like a huge bird show, with over a million pink flamingos flocking to the lake to feast on the local favorite fish. This type of flamingo is distinguished by the lowest growth of 1 m of all five existing species, but their color is by no means inferior in color saturation. On warm thermal springs, you can see a series of sticky mud nests with small gray flamingo chicks. The waters of Nakura are rich in food useful for birds, but due to the high alkalinity they are not suitable for drinking.

In addition to flamingos, pelican, cormorant, heron, warthog, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe, Thompson’s gazelle, redunka and klippspringer (skipper) can also be seen in Nakuru National Park. In the eastern part of the park there is a very beautiful forest of milkweed, and in the south, in the thickets of acacia, zoologists are trying to revive the population of the black rhinoceros, which is threatened with extinction, because. it is destroyed because of the horn, which, according to the inhabitants of Asia, is capable of increasing potency. This program is being successfully implemented, which is facilitated by the large size of the park.

Karandusi
Немного не доезжая Накуры, расположено место под названием Karandusi, имеющее историческую ценность в этих окрестностях. In 1928, archaeological excavations were carried out in this area, and numerous objects were found that testify to the settlements of ancient people about a million years ago. There is also a museum with all the finds. For tourists, the place is open daily from 08.00 to 18.00

Menengai Crater
Menengai is the crater of an extinct volcano rising near the city of Nakuru. The attraction of this place is that, having risen to a height of 2,300 m, a panoramic view of the bottom of the crater on one side and the magnificent Lake Nakuru on the other opens up. There is a mysterious legend about the crater, which says the following: during the civil strife between African tribes, warriors were thrown to the bottom of the crater, whose souls then rose in the form of wisps of smoke seeping through holes in the walls volcano. It is this legend that explains its name – in translation from the language of the Maa tribes, the word “Menenga” means the deceased.

How to get there: 160 km northwest of Nairobi and 70 km from Naivashi. The most convenient mode of transport is a car. You can also get from Nairobi by shuttle bus (matatu), Lunatic Express train or small charter plane, but only during the dry season.
