Salmiya

Salmiya (Arabic: السالمية‎) is a city in the province (governorate) of Hawally, one of the 9 districts of the province, part of the Kuwait metropolitan area. The 2nd most populous district of Kuwait (1st in the province) and one of the largest suburbs of Kuwait City. The area is 14.2 km². Population – 290,758 people (2015).

It is located in the north of the province and occupies a cape, a few kilometers from the capital of the country, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. The city has been known since the 1960s. During the Persian Gulf War (1991), the city was completely destroyed during the Iraqi occupation, then in 1993, after the end of the war, it was rebuilt again.

In the period 2010-2015, the population growth was +4.04%/year.

Salmiya has two ferry ports. Salmiya is home to Themair Stadium, the home of Al-Salmiya Football Club. The American University in Kuwait, the French School in Kuwait, the Pakistani School and College, the Indian Community School, the Indian English Academic School are located here.
