Geographic location
The city is located in the valley of the Zeravshan River, in the south of the Navoi region, 360 km southwest of Tashkent. The distance to Samarkand is 140 km, to Bukhara – almost 100 km. The Zarafshan River flows north of the city. 10 km north of the outskirts of the city, behind the banks of the Zarafshan River, the Nurata Mountains stretch.

Climate
The climate of Navoi is dry, sharply continental, with a pronounced seasonality. Temperatures can reach 54°C in summer and drop to -18°C in winter, lower temperatures are rare. Due to the low humidity, high and low temperatures are easily tolerated.
Winter (the period with an average daily temperature below 0 °C) lasts on average from the third decade of November to the second decade of March. During the calendar winter, short (3-8 days) periods of frost can be observed (with night temperatures down to -12 ° C, rarely up to -18 ° C). At the same time, thaws are frequent throughout the winter, when the temperature rises from −5 °C to 6 °C and higher, sometimes reaching values of 10..12 °C. The transitional seasons are quite short. Often almost summer temperatures are recorded in the middle and end of March and in April. In June and July, the daytime temperature usually exceeds the 45-degree mark (an average of 30-40 days during the summer season).

History
The city was founded in 1958 during the Soviet era and was located in the Bukhara region. The city was created as a center of the mining industry for the extraction of rare earth elements, precious metals and uranium in the Uzbek SSR.
In 1958, the construction of a mining and metallurgical plant began near the village of Karmana, and a new city was founded, which was named Navoi, in honor of the famous Uzbek poet and philosopher Alisher Navoi.

The new city was built in the 1960s according to the unified general plan of the Leningrad architects of the VNIIPIET Institute, which belongs to the USSR Ministry of Atomic Energy. Leningrad architects were awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1969 for the development of the general plan of the city. The project and layout of the city were also awarded prizes from other states. The main builder was the honored builder Z. P. Zarapetyan of the Uzbek SSR. The originality of its development lies in the construction of sectional and gallery houses, the use of small architectural forms, an abundance of green spaces, fountains, pools, which give the city an individual aesthetic and expressive look.
For the future city, a calm terrain was chosen, elongated in the north-south direction for 8 km, between the old regional center of Karman and a small village near the railway station of the same name

Sights
One of the favorite places of rest for citizens and tourists who come here and to nearby cities is the South Park, on the territory of which there is a stadium, a swimming pool, and cinemas. In addition, the North Park, which is much larger in area than the South Park, was recently built and named after them. Alisher Navoi. Popular places for recreation are the recreation center of the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine “Lazurnaya”, located on the shores of Lake Tudakul, as well as the mountain camp Sarmysh, located 30 km from the city in the Nurata mountains.
