Avnev (Ossetian Auneu, Georgian ავნევი – Avnevi) is a village in Transcaucasia to the west of Tskhinvali. According to the administrative-territorial division of South Ossetia, which actually controls the village, it is located in the Znauri district, according to the administrative-territorial division of Georgia – in the Karelian municipality.

Geography
It is located on the Pronya Vostochnaya River in the southeast of the Znauri district in the Georgian-populated enclave of Avnevi (Auneu)-Nuli between the Ossetian villages of Khetagurovo (to the north) and Tuldzyta (Didmukha) with Mugut (to the south).

History
At the beginning of the armed conflict in 2008, it was inhabited by Georgians and controlled by Georgia, being since 1992 in the zone of its control along with the village of Nuli. On August 7, 2008, Georgian troops and military equipment were concentrated in the area of ​​the village, which exchanged shelling with the neighboring Ossetian village of Khetagurovo and soon began an offensive through it to Tskhinvali. On the same day, a tower of the Georgian cellular telephone campaign “Magti” located near the village was blown up by shots from a grenade launcher, according to the Georgian version, the shelling was from South Ossetia. After August 2008, the village is controlled by the RSO authorities.
