Cellular

According to a referendum in 2002, the inhabitants of the island refused to introduce mobile communications. However, in order to reduce the cost of Internet access and international calls, it was decided from March 2007 to install a GSM 900 cellular communication system.

Telephone communications

The telecommunication system of the island is well developed. All telephones have direct access to the international IDD system, all calls within the island are free of charge both from private telephones and from automatic machines or from hotels.

An international call from the hotel is possible by credit card or at the expense of the host from the room. The cost of calls depends on the hotel, on average a call to Australia will cost AUD3, New Zealand – AUD4, other countries – AUD5 per minute. You can also use the long distance pay phones located at the Norfolk Telecom office (the so-called Communication Center on New Cascade Road, open 24 hours), near the Call Center, at the airport, near the Commonwealth Bank and near the video store. Payphones accept coins or prepaid Smart Cards or Coins in AUD10 and AUD20. Cost of calls on prepaid cards: Australia – AUD1.8; New Zealand – AUD2.36; other countries – AUD3.81 per minute (from 22.00 to 07.00 the tariff decreases to: Australia – AUD1.72; New Zealand – AUD1.82; other countries – AUD3.81 per minute).
