Quevedo

Quevedo (Spanish Quevedo) is a city in Ecuador, the administrative center of the canton of the same name in the province of Los Rios. The population is about 173,000 people as of 2010, which makes the city the largest in the province of Los Rios.

History
Quevedo was founded in 1838 when Camilo José Calixto asked the authorities of the nearest city of Zapotal for permission to establish a settlement here. September 22, 1852 Quevedo receives the status of a parish in the canton of Puhili. In 1857, rubber began to be mined in the vicinity of Quevedo, which contributed to the initial growth of the city.
In 1885, Quevedo became part of the canton of Latacunga. On October 6, 1860, by decision of the President of Ecuador, the province of Los Rios was created and Quevedo became part of it (the canton of Vinces).
In 1930, street electric lighting was carried out in the city. The river of the same name flowing through Quevedo connected the city with the port of Guayaquil; a Chinese community was also formed in Quevedo at that time, which eventually became the largest Asian community in Ecuador.
On October 7, 1943, the canton of Quevedo was created, and from 1948 a banana boom began, which marked a new stage in the development and growth of the city.

Geography and climate
The city of Quevedo is located in the heart of the coastal part of the country, on the banks of the Quevedo River, at an altitude of 74 meters above sea level. The city occupies a convenient geographical position, allowing to have transport links with the most important centers of the country. Quevedo is 237 km from Quito and 183 km from Guayaquil.
The average temperature fluctuates around 20 – 33 ° C, sometimes reaching a mark of 38 ° C.

Economy
Quevedo is the largest economic center of the province of Los Rios and specializes in the export of agricultural products: bananas, coffee, cocoa, cork, rubber, palm oil, fruits, soybeans, corn and others.
In the middle of the 20th century, Quevedo became the center of cocoa production and currently produces a product called “Sabor arriba” (dark chocolate with a delicate aroma). The variety of agricultural products produced in Quevedo has earned the city its nickname “Ecuador’s breadbasket”

Sport
Quevedo is home to the Deportivo Quevedo football club, which has spent several seasons in Serie A, the top division of the Ecuadorian championship. He plays his home matches at the stadium “7 October, accommodating 16,000 spectators.
