African city code of conduct

Although it is quite safe for safari in the countries we are considering, in large metropolitan areas (Nairobi, Johannesburg, etc.), the crime rate remains quite high. If you have purchased an organized safari, then the operator fully ensures your safety and, by and large, there is nothing to worry about. In the case of an independent trip, it is necessary to follow certain rules of conduct that will help reduce the risk of getting into an unpleasant situation.

Rules of conduct in African cities
– Do not wear jewelry (expensive watches, gold bracelets, etc.). Take with you only those things that will be useful on a given day. Leave the rest, including your passport and bank cards, in the safe of your hotel.

– Set aside a small amount of cash separately so that when buying inexpensive things on the street, outsiders cannot see how much money you have with you.

– It is best to walk around the city in a group (two or more people).

– At night, move around the city only by taxi (do not walk).

– If the taxi is without a meter, then negotiate the price of the trip in advance.

– Try not to look like a typical tourist. Looking at a map and reading a guide book on the street will attract unwanted attention.

– Don’t be afraid to say no to people who sell things on the street. The best tactic in this case is to look disinterested, say “no” once or twice, and then ignore them after that.

– Be skeptical of people coming up to you with sad stories. Most of them are not true and invented to solicit money.

– Be careful when withdrawing money from an ATM. If it seems that you are being followed, it is better to change the ATM. When entering the PIN code, cover the keys with one hand. Do not let anyone help you and do not talk during operations.

– In public transport and cafes, keep your bag in sight.

– If you are traveling with your luggage, do not put your passport, bank cards and other valuables there. Keep them in a small bag (backpack) with you. Since in case of loss or theft of luggage, the most important things will remain with you.

– Always close your car doors and windows when driving in a busy city. If someone wants to talk to you, stay in the car just open the window a little.

By following these simple rules of conduct in African cities, your trip will be safe and interesting.
