Nabanna is the festival of the new harvest, which is as old as the earth itself. It is celebrated in the Bengali month of Agrahayan (November-December). Peasants return home with armfuls of harvested rice. There is fun everywhere. Women prepare payesh (rice slurry sweetened with patali, palm syrup) to treat their neighbors.

After gaining independence in Bangladesh, the Day of Remembrance of the heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of their country was declared. It is celebrated on February 21st. On this day in 1952, young people, mostly students, rebelled against the declaration of Urdu as the only national language of East Pakistan (Bangladesh). The police crushed the uprising, and several dozen students were killed. This protest rally was the first omen of freedom for Bangladesh. Memorial Day is also called Omor Ekushe (the immortal 21st). Thousands of people come to Shahid Minar in the evening to lay flowers.

Independence Day: On March 26, 1971, Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan. This day was also declared a National Day as 3 million people of Bangladesh gave their lives for the freedom of their country. On this day, national flags flutter in the streets, schoolchildren take part in parades. In the evening, cultural programs and films are shown.

Pahela Baishakh (Bengali New Year) is one of the oldest festivals in Bangladesh. It is celebrated on April 14 (15). The day begins with a breakfast of syrah (rice cereal), gur and yogurt. Then people gather for fairs, which take place every year in a certain place. In Dhaka, concerts and processions are held on this day. The most popular event is Ramna Batamul. Artists, mostly women, dressed in yellow saris with red trim, sing the songs of Tagore and Nazrul Islam. Fairs and celebrations continue throughout the week.

VE Day: After a bloody war of independence led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on December 16, 1971, the remaining 90,000 soldiers of the Pakistani army surrendered. The valiant freedom fighters entered the capital Dhaka with weapons in their hands. The inhabitants joyfully greeted the soldiers marching through the streets. This morning in Bangladesh starts with 31 volleys in the air. A military parade is usually held in the capital. Hundreds of thousands of people gather to watch it. Wreaths are laid at the Jatiya Smriti Shoudh (the national monument to the fallen freedom fighters) in memory of those who gave their lives for the freedom of the fatherland.

During Eid-ul-Azh, it is customary to sacrifice a cow or a goat (there are very few rams in Bangladesh) in memory of the act of Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son in honor of Allah.

Eid-e-Miladunnabi: This day marks the anniversary of the birth of Hazrat Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam. He was born on Monday 12th of the month of Rabiul Auvwal (Arabic calendar) in 570 AD. Muslims around the world celebrate this holiday with joy. Celebrations continue for several days, including the 12th. This day is a public holiday in Bangladesh. Radio and television broadcast programs dedicated to this holiday.

Durga Puja is one of the most significant Hindu festivals. Durga is the mother goddess in Hinduism. According to legend, she was born by the male gods so that she could kill the demon Mahisha. After the first appearance of the moon in Ashvin, a holiday begins, which lasts 10 days. Murti (picture) Durga is dressed in colorful clothes. The youth dance and sing hymns. On the tenth day, the murti are immersed in water, usually in a river, and people return home.
