Import and export of local or foreign currency is not limited (amounts equivalent to 1 million yen or more are subject to mandatory declaration). It is also mandatory to declare gold items of the 900th test if their total weight exceeds 1 kg.

Persons over the age of 20 are allowed duty-free import of up to 400 cigarettes or 100 cigars, or 500 g of tobacco; up to 3 bottles of alcoholic beverages (up to 0.75 liters each), up to 56 ml (2 ounces) of perfume, as well as other goods with a total value of no more than 200 thousand yen.

The import of firearms and ammunition is strictly prohibited (cold, hunting and pneumatic weapons are imported only on the basis of permission from the National Security Service of Japan); drugs and psychotropic substances (for their importation, deportation and a life ban on entry into the country threaten); certain medicines (especially those containing 1-deoxyephedrine); counterfeit securities and banknotes; fresh fruits, vegetables and plants, animals and a range of food products of animal and vegetable origin (primarily meat and meat products, as well as various fruit crops).

It is also prohibited to import pornographic materials, films or publications containing scenes of violence and cruelty; magazines, photographs, drawings and prints of obscene content, printed publications and other materials that undermine public order; counterfeit products, as well as things and items that damage the trademark, copyright and patent law.

To import pets, you must first (at least 40 days) obtain permission from the Quarantine Bureau of Japan (Quarantine Bureau of Japan). The animal must be equipped with a microchip (must comply with ISO 11784 and 11785 standards) and be accompanied by an international veterinary certificate and a certificate of vaccination against rabies.

The export of a reasonable amount of alcoholic and tobacco products is allowed. The export of art and antiques without the permission of the relevant authorities is prohibited.
