Gumi

Gumi (Korean: 구미시?, 龜尾市?, Gumi-si) is a city in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, South Korea. Large industrial center. It is located on the main highway of the country – the Seoul-Busan highway.

History
At the time of the Silla state, Ilseongung (Ilseong County) was located on the territory of modern Gumi. In 614, the county was upgraded to “chu” status. During the Joseon Dynasty, Ilseong changed its name several times – in 1413, Seonju County was founded here, then, in 1896, the territory became part of Seongsan County. Gumi was one of the districts of the county (1914). In 1963, Gumi was upgraded from “myeon” to “eup”, and in 1978, Gumi was given city status (“si”). During the 1960s and 1970s, Gumi developed as one of the largest industrial centers in the country. Seongsan County was merged into Gumi in 1995.

Geography
Gumi is located in the central part of Gyeongsangbuk-do province. The landscape is predominantly mountainous. It borders Sangju and Gimcheon to the west and northwest, Chilgok County to the south, Kunwi County to the east, and Uisong County to the north and northeast.

Economy
Until the 60s of the 20th century, the Gumi industry was poorly developed. However, in the 60s it was decided to create a large industrial area here. Since then, Gumi’s economy has been closely linked to industrial production. The factories of the largest Korean companies are located here: LG, Samsung, Daewoo, etc. The main production products are consumer electronics and textiles.
