Baoding

Baoding (Chinese: 保定, pinyin: Bǎodìng) is an urban district in Hebei Province, China, 140 kilometers from Beijing.

History
The state of the Later Yan in the 4th century placed its capital Zhongshan (中山) on the lands of modern Dingzhou.
Under the Northern Song empire, the military region of Baozhai (保塞军) was founded in 960, and in 980 it was raised in status to Baozhou (保州). In 992, a walled city was built, which more than once withstood Khitan attacks. Later, he became part of the Jin Empire, and when Genghis Khan went to war against the Jurchens, he was destroyed by the Mongols.
In 1227, the Mongols again built a fortified city in these places, which began to cover the approaches to Khanbalik. The Mongols divided the country into lu provinces, and in 1239 the Baozhou region was renamed Shuntian Province (顺天路), and after the founding of Khanbaliq, it was renamed Baoding Province (保定路). So for the first time the name “Baoding” appeared, composed of the hieroglyphs “protect” (the capital) and “put things in order” (in the country); Baoding province included 7 regions and 8 counties.
After the Mongol Yuan Empire was overthrown by the Chinese Ming Empire, the province of Baoding was transformed into the Baoding Province (保定府) in 1368. In 1403, Beijing became the capital of the country, and its security became important, so in the 16th century, the earthen walls of the Baoding fortress were gradually rebuilt into brick ones. Under the Qing Empire, the governor of Zhili province was located here since 1669.
After the Xinhai Revolution and the formation of the Republic of China, the administrative divisions of the sub-provincial level were unified, and Baoding was transformed into Qingyuan County. In 1913, the governing bodies of Zhili Province moved to Tianjin.
In 1935, Tianjin became a city of central government, and the government of Hebei again moved to Baoding. During the Sino-Japanese War, Baoding was occupied by Japanese troops.

After the end of World War II, the war between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang resumed in China. On November 5, 1948, the People’s Liberation Army surrounded Baoding, and on November 22, Kuomintang troops fled to Beijing, leaving the city to the Communists. After that, a distinction was drawn between the jurisdictions of the authorities of Baoding City and Qingyuan County; the border of their territories became the outer city moat of Baoding, and the authorities of Qingyuan County moved from Baoding City to Zhongzhan Township.
In August 1949, the Baoding Special Region (保定专区), consisting of 1 city and 22 counties, and the Dingxian Special Region (定县专区), consisting of 12 counties, were formed. In 1954, the Dingxian Special Region was disbanded; 6 of the counties included in it were transferred to the Shijiazhuang Special Region (石家庄专区), and 6 to the Baoding Special Region. In April 1958, the Hebei provincial government again moved to Tianjin. In November 1958, after the change in the administrative-territorial division, the Baoding Special Region began to consist of 1 city and 10 counties, and in 1960 the city and the special region were merged into a single city district. In 1961, the Baoding Special Region was re-established, and since 1962 it has again become composed of 1 city and 22 counties. In 1966, the Hebei provincial government returned to Baoding, but moved to Shijiazhuang in 1968.
In 1968, the Baoding Special Region was renamed Baoding County (保定地区). In 1983, Baoding was separated from the county into a city of provincial subordination, and Mancheng County came under its jurisdiction. In 1986, Qingyuan County came under the jurisdiction of the city of Baoding. In 1987, Baoding Suburban District was disbanded.
On December 23, 1994, by the Decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Baoding County and Baoding City were disbanded, and Baoding City District was established on their territory.
