Security

After the events of August 2008, no terrorist acts were registered on the territory of the republic.

The crime situation in the Republic of South Ossetia in recent years tends to improve, which is facilitated by the Investment Program implemented by Russia, the growth in the number of jobs, the improvement of the material and technical base of the investigative bodies of the Republic, etc. At the same time, the problem remains that the population has a significant amount of firearms and ammunition (consequences of the events of the 1990s and August 2008).

When visiting the regions of the republic, one should take into account the fact that many settlements of the Republic of South Ossetia are located in close proximity, and sometimes right on the border with Georgia. Therefore, it is not recommended to visit the regions of the republic (especially the border zones of the Znauri, Tskhinvali and Leningor regions) without being accompanied by persons who know the route and territory well, and prior informing the local authorities.

Established norms of behavior:

There are no laws in the Republic of South Ossetia that normatively fix local customs and traditions.
According to the established norms of behavior on the streets of the republic, it is not customary, for example, to openly drink alcoholic beverages, women are practically excluded from smoking on the streets and in public places (except for secluded cabins in restaurants, etc.).
Guests of the republic must be extremely correct in dealing with women.
Attempts to attract attention or get to know a woman on the street or in a public place can be perceived as a sign of disrespect.
In general, the mentality of the population and the established norms of behavior and morality are similar to the customs adopted in the North Caucasian republics of the Russian Federation.
All major ethnic groups practice Orthodox Christianity.
The hospitality characteristic of all Caucasian peoples is especially extended to guests from Russia.
Visitors may receive invitations to visit, treat themselves to wine, celebrate, for example, the beginning or end of joint work with a feast, and only at the expense of the host.
Organization and payment of such festive events by Ossetian hosts is considered a norm of behavior and a sign of attention to guests.
In some cases, invitations are formal (for example, late in the evening) and in such situations, it is appropriate to refuse.
