Choloma

Choloma (Spanish Choloma) is the third largest city in Honduras, located in the northwest of the country in the department of Cortes. Choloma is located between San Pedro Sula, the country’s second city, and the port of Puerto Cortes.

History
To the north of the modern location of the city, back in pre-Columbian times, there was a settlement of the Xikak tribe (descendants of the Maya) called Tolomak. After the Spanish conquest of America, a Franciscan mission called Santa Maria Candelaria was founded here, which was destroyed in 1739, like other settlements in the Sula Valley, during an anti-Spanish uprising. In 1739, the population of the destroyed mission founded Choloma, which in 1894 received the rights of the city under the name of Paradis. After 39 years, the city was returned to its original name.

Banana plantations appeared in the region in the 19th century, and sugarcane cultivation began in the 20th century, but it quickly fell into decay.

Economy
In recent years, Choloma has developed dynamically due to cheap labor. In particular, the city is home to many industrial enterprises owned by multinational companies.
